The ILRI campus

The campus is spacious and includes sports facilities (swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, gym and walking/jogging space), clinic, travel agency and post office (open only during office hours). If you want to use any of the sports facilities, please come prepared with the necessary sportswear and rackets. The campus offers comfortable and spacious accommodation (up to 60 rooms) with private bathroom, minimal kitchen facilities, DSTV satellite TV and telephone. The facilities provided on the ILRI campus are essentially meant for ILRI staff, students, visitors and guests and are generally at the required institutional standards.

Bank: Wegagen Bank, situated in the ILRI compound, will provide foreign exchange service 8:00–12:00/13:30–16:30 Monday through Friday and 8:00–11:30 on Saturdays.

Cafeteria: ILRI operates a cafeteria service for staff and hostel residents. All meals should be paid for in cash. If you cannot pay your bill in cash, please sign the bill and settle it at the cafeteria before you leave ILRI. 

Communications: Internet access facilities are available daily and free of charge at the ILRI internet café in the infocentre from 8am until midnight for use by visitors on first-come-first-served basis. There is also the option to connect computers directly through cable in the hostel rooms and through the wireless access in the meeting rooms with assistance of the IT services.

Electricity supply: The electric supply operates on 220 volts, 50 cycles. Please contact the Front Office at ILRI if you require an adapter.

ILRI

Location: ILRI campus (Map) is situated on the outskirts of Addis Ababa, at an altitude of 8,000 ft (2,400 m) above sea level. Check here for the detailed map of Addis Ababa, recently available from the web.

Security: The ILRI campus is very safe but you should avoid leaving valuables unattended in empty meeting/public rooms. Should any security problem arise during your stay, please notify the Housing Office. If after working hours, contact the security guards (who patrol the compound 24 hours a day), Security Office (Ext.2700), Zebu Club staff or the Housing and Catering Office.

Staff Clinic: The ILRI Staff Clinic (ext. 2390) is located behind Hostel Block A and the Housing Office. The clinic is open during the following hours: Monday – Friday 08:15 – 17:00. Use of the clinic is charged for and fees should be paid at the clinic in cash. In case any urgent medical assistance is required after office hours, please contact any of the following:

Transport: If you wish to go into town, please contact the Transport Office (ext. 2380) for assistance. Transport from/to the airport and visits within Addis can be arranged at a charge, based on vehicle availability.

Travel: Contact ILRI National Liaison Office (Ext.2116) second floor, Administration Building, for your travel needs/arrangements. The National Liaison Office provides airport transfer service and assistance with on-arrival visas (as required and appropriate) at a fee.

  • Airport transfer: $ 30 per round trip
  • Visa assistance: $ 20 per visa*

*[visa on arrival can be processed only for travelers departing from places where there is no Ethiopian Embassy/Consular Office presence.]

Water: The water in the flask in your room is safe to drink. Tap water is adequate for personal hygiene needs. At ILRI Campus extra water is stored in the bucket in the bathrooms for use in case of possible interruption in water supply.
